Tata trusts - partition archive research grants

Faculty and student researchers are welcome to apply.
The Tata Trusts and The 1947 Partition Archive (hereafter “The Archive”) are pleased to re-announce a one-month immersive residency grant program for academic researchers who seek to explore and study The 1947 Partition Archive’s complete oral history collections including over 9,400 oral history accounts on video, at one of three partner universities, including Ashoka University, University of Delhi and Guru Nanak Dev University.
Nine (9) Residency research grants are currently being offered to (1) faculty, and (2) student graduate and post-graduate researchers working under faculty supervision. The collection is unexplored and will hold relevance to those pursuing research in subjects related to South Asian culture, ethnography, and history over the last century, including the pre- and postcolonial period.

Successful applicants will be awarded a generous living stipend and provided one (1) month access to The 1947 Partition Archive’s complete collections.
This research grant is presently open only to residents of India (see note below).
*Note: The 1947 Partition Archive is working to seek donor and institutional partners to support similar grants in other countries, communities in geographies. We are grateful to the Tata Trusts for supporting this work in India.

Guideline for applying to the grant

  • Consider the scope of your research proposal. Too general a question may make it difficult to identify relevant interviews in a manageable number for a month’s time; too narrow a focus might restrict you to a very small number of interviews.
  • How do you plan on using The 1947 Partition Archive’s interviews? What are the unifying features of the stories you are looking for (i.e. specific geography, language, etc.)?
  • How do you plan to keep track of the information of the interviews while you work? How will this information inform understanding of the research question asked?
  • How will you adapt to the unexpected while working with The 1947 Partition Archive material? If the information you are seeking is not available, less detailed, or more numerous than anticipated, how might you adjust your approach?

Selection Procedure:

Selection of the candidates will be a three-tiered process.

  • The selection of candidates will be a two-tiered process
  • First, assessment of the research proposal by The 1947 Partition Archive team
  • Second, an in-depth review of the proposal by the Selection Committee composed of peers and professionals in the field.
